You don’t have to wait until back to school to start a zero waste lunch kit for yourself. In fact, this idea was never intended to be just for school kids or teens but for everyone including for going to work. Zero Waste means nothing to be thrown away such as plastics or wrappings. Fruit simply go into a compost. So how do you get started? I have collected a few essentials you will need to build your zero waste lunch kit.
Lunch Bag
Why does it matter what kind of lunch bag you get? Well, it matters when it gets to the point where it is unusable any more. What happened to it then. Most people throw it away. So you will want to use a lunch bag that you could use again even if you needed to throw it away. Cloth organic lunch bags are great. Not only do they look like a typical bag you carry any way you can use it in many ways after that.
Sandwich Bags
No need to keep buying those plastic sandwich bags that come on a box of 20 and then you throw away when you are done. Let’s avoid that. Get reusable sandwich bags. I love using mine all the time for my lunches and when we have a picnic from time to time. It’s great for snacks as well too.
Containers
Not everything can fit into a sandwich bag. I know so you bring more food like leftovers from last night. Then you are going to need a container that microwavable. I personally use bento box containers for lunches like those. All you have to do is eat, clean and use it again. Simple and easy.
Utensils
Stop using plastic cutlery when you can use the cutlery of your own from home. Most workplaces supply cutely as well. If you really want to get to get into the zero waste-free lunch try out bamboo utensils.
Water Bottles
You don’t have to only use water bottles for water but it is good to have one for water. Also, water bottles are only reserved for the gym or sports. Don’t think that way. By having a bottle you can use throughout the day over and over again. This means you don’t have to find a recycling bin to throw away your pop bottles. It yours to keep plus there are so many styles to express the kind of person you are.
Straws
Say no to plastic straws. They simply stay in our oceans and get stuck in our ocean life. Now I am not saying to never have a straw. In fact, I am not saying to never use one, there are straws out there that are reusable so you never need to throw it away. This is a great alteration to ones our there to still give you that straw desire while maintaining a zero waste life.

Final Thoughts
It is never too late to start a zero waste lunch. It is not too hard and in fact, by doing so it not only helps the environment but also your wallet since you will no longer need to buy all the time. I took a pledge at the green living expo with Greenpeace, this year to reduce my plastic in my home and life. I do this anyways but thought to pledge it loud and proud (aka signing my name) really makes it concrete. This is by no means a sponsored post but a company that I think is on the right track to make a difference. Did you know? Every year, up to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans. That’s the equivalent of a truckload every minute! Greenpeace is campaigning to stop this, and I’ve pledged to help out in any way I can. Will you join me? Here’s the link.
