What I’ve Learned About The Perfectionist Method

What I've Learned About The Perfectionist Method | City of Creative Dreams

Perfectionist is something we throw around. It is something that we say often to people or ourselves because we have higher expectations of certain things. Now, I like to talk about my perfectionist quality a lot because it is something I struggled with so much in my younger years and that still creeps up on me when I least expect it. To some, it may be easy to simply say get messy and have fun with it but when it comes to myself, it is a real challenge. The perfectionist method is three things to me, it is the root, the fear and the mindset. Let’s walk through these three keys to perfection.

1. It is Rooted

Personally, for me, I believe it was rooted. Have you ever felt like you had to stay in the lines? Have you felt like no one cheers in your wins in life? I was in a box of “why I didn’t do better” or “not good enough” and so on. Not being cheered for the big wins in my life and being judged on why it wasn’t perfect stuck with me.

As much as my mom tried her hardest to instill positivity and cheered for my wins, I just couldn’t see it as she did because of the negative people in my life. I constantly had to seek perfection. It kills me to think about this because there are things I have done amazing in and never allowed myself to bask in the awesome moment. I couldn’t see the shine in my treasures.

2. It is Fear

It is what other people think about us that holds us (and me) back. Have you ever had friends you wanted to impress so you suppressed something you truly loved? I know I have. As we grow older we start lowering our voice and entering opinions of other voices such as friends or certain family members.

We don’t want the judging, the criticism or the rejection. Who does? It’s not fun to put yourself out there just to have someone tear down your tower of happiness. Nope, that doesn’t sound fun to me. So, we stop ourselves before the spark of brilliance can even escape and hide us from being the true us. It’s such a shame because we got some much to offer and the difference between all of us is what makes us unique.

3. It’s Your Mindset

I for sure know that this is something I am going to constantly have to work through. It won’t be easy all the time to change this mindset but it is not impossible. You can switch the roads of perfection. It takes little steps and sometimes even a push or two for yourself to really get out of it. I know that it is possible because I have had great days where I tossed being perfect aside and get out of my way. And there are days when I simply couldn’t let go. It is all about the mindset to take it day by day.

Final Thoughts

Are you a perfectionist? Then you know the daily struggle it is to make someone (us) who is utterly perfectly imperfect into a perfect person. It is a struggle because we simply can’t be perfect no matter how much we try. We weren’t made to be perfect but made to be the only person we can be which is us.
