You would be surprised by the number of ways that you can organize your clothes. Before you set time aside and really dig through your clothing, I want you to first prepare yourself. Yes, I am talking about getting yourself a few things to make organizing your clothes less like a chore and more fun!
What you are going to need is this:
- a garbage bag or donation box
- music of your choice
- a letting go state of mind
- awesome organizing products to spice up your closet.
All of the above is optional, but you will need a garbage bag or donation box to store the items of clothing you no longer want. Alright, let’s get into the seven ways you can organize your clothes like a pro!
1. By Category
This is a great way to put similar types of clothing together. Think about it like your clothes are family and all of your jeans want to be next to each other. They also don’t want to be too far away from the shorts. It is the same for in your closet with your dresses, suits or skirts. The main point is that your clothing types are all together in one section. This provides you with a clear game plan, giving your eyes an easy view of what you desire to wear.
2. Colour
Taking categorizing to the next level is sorting your clothing by colour. If you haven’t done so yet, this is a huge trend and has become very popular with the book and Netflix show – The Home Edit.
This is especially great for those who have more than black or their one favourite colour or white in their closets or drawers. If you are rainbow-lious, then why not have your closet or drawers line up to resemble your rainbow fashion line.
3. Occasion
You don’t have to live a luxurious life to have your clothing divided into occasions. Yes, you read that correctly. You just have to give it a try. Depending on the amount of clothing you have, you can divide your clothing into the evening, day, casual or formal is another way to organize your clothes.
This is especially great if you are the type who likes to go out a lot, have a lot of clothing for any occasion, or have a lot of activities in your schedule. Let your closet represent that you got more to do than the average person.
4. By Outfits
Do you like to put out your outfits together ahead of time? Then why not do the same for your clothing. Put together pieces of clothing that go well together. Try assembling outfits within your closet instead of single garments on hangers. When you do this ahead of time, you are making your life easier when you go into your closet. Simply grab a hanger and go.
5. Divided into Seasons
One of the most popular ways to organize your clothes is by season. This involves only keeping what you will wear during the season out and the rest neatly packed away. Not only will it give your closet more space but it is also a great way to declutter as you unpack for the next season.
Living in a small space? Then this is especially great if you live in an apartment or have a very small closet. Everything you will need for winter, fall, spring or summer will be in view during that season and the rest will wait for their debut.
6. Using Technology
Most of us have smartphones, am I right? What I love about them is that they have just about an app for everything. So you shouldn’t be surprised to know that your phone can help you organize your clothes and your closet. Here are 3 apps to help you organize your closet too:
7. Divided by Usage
Lastly, you can organize your clothes by what you use the most to least. This can help you also to see what clothing you wear often and which ones you need to dust the cobwebs off. It will help give the clothing you use the least a second chance to impress you, and shine on the sidewalk. Plus, when coworkers or loved ones see your clothing, it will encourage people to ask you “is that outfit new?”

These are all great tips! It’s also great to know which items should be hung and which should be folded. Knits like t-shirts and sweaters do better when folded, while easily-wrinkled items generally do better hung.
That is a great point! Thank you!
