There comes a time in every girl’s life when we, you know, have that time of the month for the first time. That is right, we are talking about how to prepare your child for her period. “Woah! Hold on… I am not ready for that right now.” Or “I still have years until then” you may think but time as you know it goes in a blink of an eye. I looked back at baby pictures and can’t believe how time just flew by to now my son is a toddler.
So let’s be real, this is an awkward time for everyone (more so single parent dads lol) and yet this idea may just give you the extra strength needed to help! Let’s talk about first period essentials!
My First Period Story
Now, I am not here to go into the details about my first time, however, it is what my mom did for me is what I truly remember. Since I was not feeling well, my mom let me stay home from school, bought me snacks and went to Blockbusters (if you are a teenager right now, it was back when there were no Netflix, DVDs or BlueRay or iPods).
I spent the day eating snacks, taking Advil for the pain and watching movies all day then went back to school the next day. That is my story, however, you can bet there are better or even worse stories than mine.
Why This Idea?
Today things are different, my little sister (who is 12 on the autism specturm and has extremely high anxiety) can’t mentally handle this huge change. It can be so scary especially if this is your first time.
You are going to wonder about things. So, I had to approach this a different matter (aka without talking about it). I really had to make this welcome pack or what I like to say a first period kid. It is very simple and sweet all while being very last minute.
Although I am talking about my sister, if you are a mom (or even a dad) this topic can be very awkward or easy to talk about. This kit only makes things easier and a smooth tradition.
First Period Kit Guide:
It is true that there are many first period kits out there, however, to me, handpicking items that cater to my child (or in this case my sister) has a more personal touch than simply buying a kit. I am going to show you what I created for my sister and how you can create your own first period kit filled with first period essentials!

Snacks Ideas-
Snacks are always a great addition to a gift or surprise while some like me love sweets, others like salty treats such as my sister. Yummy! If you’re not too sure, you might want to go for the classic chocolate or get all three! Of course, if snacks is not something you want to do, you can get them a dinner of their choice as well.

Lastly, Step 4:
Of course, I had to take this up a step further. This may not be a first period essential but it is an added touch. I had these labels that I bought from Micheal’s Craft Store a while back and thought I could use them here for a positive board. No one feels there best the first time so having encouraging words really helps boost the mood and writing them in nice colourful markers is a nice touch.
I borrowed my mom’s Chalk Board marker that I also got from Micheal’s Craft Store and thought I would keep the positive and encouraging words going by writing on the box!

Final Thoughts
Whatever way you choose to do this or choose to create your first period essentials, remember that this will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Your tween or tween will appreciate how you made them feel on that day. It is the efforts that we bring that leave an impression even if they don’t show it. You got this!
Now if you need a little more help or just love a great freebie. I have an awesome checklist with more ideas that you can find in my jaw-dropping resource printable library.
