It’s amazing how something as simple as a plant can enliven a space! It adds a pop of color and visual interest to any room and just makes you feel good. Plus, plants can make your home healthier. They improve indoor air quality by expelling oxygen and removing carbon dioxide, and they can help keep illnesses at bay. Houseplants have also been found to improve concentration and can boost moods, too!

Given the many benefits that houseplants provide, you really should consider bringing some into your home. But if your thumb is more brown than green, you might be worried about maintaining your houseplants. Have no fear! Here’s a look at some excellent plants that thrive inside with very little maintenance and will make your home a happier, healthier place to be.

Lavender

Lavender is one of the most popular fragrances used in essential oils, and for good reason: it’s been proven to provide a number of benefits, some of the most notable of which include:

  •           Lowers stress and anxiety
  •           Promotes better sleep
  •           Eases migraines
  •           Improves functioning of the immune system
Add to that the beautiful aroma and the soothing purple flowers and lavender makes for a beautiful indoor plant. To make your lavender plants flourish indoors, make sure you place them in a space that receives a healthy amount of sunlight (these plants thrive in full sun) and water it only when the soil feels dry to the touch. Also, opt for a smaller variety of lavender, as they’ll adapt better to a pot than larger varieties. Other than choosing a sunny location and watering once in a while, lavender can thrive inside without a lot of care.

Aloe Vera

If there’s only one plant that you have in your home, make it aloe vera. This succulent has been used medicinally for thousands of years. The gel in its leaves has antiseptic and therapeutic qualities that promote faster healing of wounds and burns (including sunburns), while soothing pain. On top of that, aloe vera does a great job of purifying indoor air, as it absorbs benzene, formaldehyde, and other contaminants.

Find a sunny spot for your aloe plant, as they thrive on sunlight (as all succulents do), and water sparingly (about once every three weeks). Whenever you cut, a scrap, or a burn, just snap off a small piece of one of the leaves and rub it directly on your skin for instant soothing and to promote faster healing.

Peace Lily

The peace lily is a favorite of houseplant enthusiasts. Not only are its large, dark green and leathery leaves and oversized white flowers beautiful, but this plant provides several benefits and it’s easy to care for, to boot!

Peace lily breaks down and neutralizes carbon monoxide, benzene, formaldehyde, and other toxic gases, making your indoor air much healthier to breathe. To care for your peace lily, place it in a location where it will receive indirect sunlight (if the leaves start turning yellow, it’s getting too much sun), and water when it looks like it’s starting to droop or the surface of the soil is dry to the touch.
