With all that is going on with this uncertain time and the social distancing, we are all experiencing, I am checking in to see how everyone is doing. Are you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, frustrated, tired or all of the above? Not being able to leave the house for this long is not easy for anyone. You are not alone. The question is what is the best guide to surviving social distancing? There are many versions out there, but I thought I would share mine. Feel free to use the tips mentions in today’s article and make it your own.
1. Wash Hands, Clean Surfaces and Sanitize Often
It is so important to stay home but just as important to wash our hands, clean surfaces and sanitize often. Clean items you might not even have been thinking about like items you use often. Start with your credit cards, keys, makeup brushes, jewelry, screens and reusable grocery bags to name a few.
If we don’t need to be outside, then don’t. Take the extra time we have to make sure we are providing a healthy and safe home environment for you to live in. Wear gloves (and a mask, if have one) when you do need to leave your home but also take precautions when you order packages, takeout food or groceries to your home.
The video below has really opened my eyes to the best practices we all should be doing to keep our home safe.
2. Create a Morning Routine
Before you really start your day, you need to create a morning routine to fuel energy in your body. Try starting your day with stretches, meditation, affirmations or writing in a gratitude journal. This will allow your mind and body to pause for a moment. I find that I think and feel better when I take 5-10 minutes to meditate in the morning.
Also, in your morning routine, consider cooking yourself a healthy meal or blend yourself a smoothie so your body is well equipped for the day. Use this time in the morning to exercise with the equipment you have at home, sign yourself up for online workout classes or find a free workout video on YouTube.
3. Continue to Stay Connected
You can still stay connected while social distancing, it will just be done virtually instead of in person. Here is a list of ways you can still have fun with friends and family even if you are not physically close to one another:
- Have a Netflix Watch Party (with this Google Chrome Extention)
- Video Chat with Friends and Family via Whatsapp, Zoom, or Group FaceTime
- Text check-ins
- Phone calls.
4. Spring Clean, Declutter and Organize Your Home
You can bet that I am doing all of these! One thing I hear all the time is that we don’t have enough time to really spring clean, declutter and organize our homes. Well, guess what, now we do. Use this time to really give our home some love and attention. You are going to be surprised by all the things you find and how you feel when you are done.

5. Work from Home
It might feel strange to work from home when you are not used to it but by creating a great workspace area, you can feel more comfortable and motivated to work on projects that need to get done. Plus, it definitely helps the time pass. Make sure that you are scheduling in break times, finding ways to stay focus and don’t work past your regular work hours.

6. Activities You Can Do at Home
Alright, so we covered morning routines, working from home and ways to stay connected but what about after work. Since we can’t go outside to explore the city or engage in the nightlife options we are used to, here is a list of things you can do at home to pass the time:
- Read books on your bookshelf
- Borrow Ebooks or Audio Books from library
- Write a letter
- Watch tv (Netflix, Hulu, Apple Tv, Crave, Disney+, Amazon Prime and more)
- Virtual Museums Tours
- Broadway Live Online
- Listen to podcasts
- Creating mood boards
7. SelfCare
During this time, we should really focus on yourself mentally and physically. Make sure you are still getting enough sleep. Use this time to get through issues in your life in ways of a virtual therapy (try using Teletherapy), reducing your stress by taking time out to meditate or create a spa night with face masks and bubble baths. We all get affected in different ways so use this time to self evaluate what you need for yourself.
8. Learn a new skill
We have time in our hands to focus on things we always wanted to learn how to do. Just because we can’t physically go to a class, we can always learn a new skill virtually. There are plenty of online courses and classes out there for just about anything you want to know. If you have always wanted to learn a new language, now is the time, check out Duolingo and start learning. Here is a list for some more inspiration:
- Blogging
- Cooking
- Gardening
- Drawing
- Knitting
- Photography
- Art
- Music
- Sewing
- Dancing
- Writing
Final Thoughts
Use the tips above to stay home as much as possible. Times like this we have the choice of how we react to circumstances and what we can do within our lives. Outside may be limited but inside our home, we have so many possibilities to explore. Remember you are not alone. We are all in this together. Stay safe and be wise! You got this! Share with me in the comments what you are doing during this time!
