It is finally time to share my shared bedroom makeover reveal. It took some hard work but I have finally finished and couldn’t be any more excited than I am right this minute. I am very proud of how my bedroom has turned out. Especially my son’s side of the bedroom. Sharing a bedroom with a five-year-old is not always easy but with my plan we make it work nicely. It is all about the mind frame. I don’t have the luxury to up and move into a bigger home right now but I am using what I have to create my dream home.
Shared Bedroom Before
Here is the bedroom before. It did not always look this way, however, over time I started to give up on this room. It happens. Even organized people like me have a breaking point. This was it for me. When my son’s bed broke before our designed plan to move, I had to think of something quickly.

Share Bedroom After
We moved my sibling’s bunk bed into my room. It took my mom and myself some time to get it out from one room to another. I got knocked in the toe very hard but slapped a bandage and kept going. I personally was not loving the raw wood style as my focal point when I enter my room. So, I bought some white paint and painted only the outside of the bunk bed to give it some life.
Bunk Bed Walk-In Closet
For under my son’s bunk bed I knew I needed to make walk-in closet because his clothes were expanding beyond my original closet IKEA hack. I made sure to still use the same bookshelf design but cut it down a size by removing the bottom half. It no longer can fit all the clothes that it used to so it is not dedicated to just my son’s jackets and sweaters.

The baskets are still there for extra small blankets, winter items and my laundry items. His towel and robe still hang on the hook on the side. I also moved my dresser underneath for my son and bought myself a new one. There was no need for my son to had fabric drawers anymore when he is a growing boy with growing clothes.
Bunk Bed Walk-In Play Area
My son’s toys get everywhere so there needed to be more space for them. I used the table that my last closet was standing on to create a play table to hold smaller toys while the bigger toys stay in the toy box.
More storage is important for our bedroom. I have to be smart with our space because space is so limited. Plus reusing items I already have is cost effective. Best kind of recycling!
The bookshelves are the same ones from before. I simply moved it down from the wall to this section. I find that is works better for my son because he is able to reach it without me. I no longer fear of books falling down on him. It is way more accessible lower down.
IKEA doesn’t make this certain toy box anymore but they still have ones that are similar. I am glad I got it when I did a while back. It still holds a lot.
Stairs & Storage
Wonder what I did with the bottom half of the previous closet? Well, I used it as not only a shoe organizer but also a stepping latter to towards the latter to the bunk bed. I noticed that when I removed the bottom on the bunk bed, it left my son without one of the steps of the latter. Therefore, using the bottom half of the old closet works perfectly.
Top Bunk
My sister no longer needed her tent for her bed since it would not fit on her new bed so my son got to keep it. I have a few more ideas for the top bunk but for now, this will do. My son loves Paw Patrol so finding these pillowcases at Dollarama was perfect. He is nicely surrounded by his stuffies (aka stuff animals).
The other half is where I set up a small bunk bed stand. I noticed that my son complained about his bed getting too hot during the summer so I added a fan. In order to keep the fan from falling down, I added a shelf that I bought from IKEA. I originally had it for my night table stand next to my bed but had to remove it to move my bed over. I also have a Himalayan lamp there as well which is great as light for him and helps for his asthma.
Final Thoughts
This shared bedroom makeover was a lot of work. I am happy that my son has a space of his very own within our room. The closet gives him, his own independence to not only keep it clean but get what he needs without help. He has an area perfect to play with his toys and store his toys. His top bunk is the right size for him. I got to paint for the first time which was fun and gave the bunk bed a fresh look. I am overall, happy with our bedroom so far.

Great job! I too need storage but have to be creative with my storage selection. Finding those good deals or repurposing items into something else is hard but rewarding!
I completely agree, Laura. Thank you for your comment!
