If there is one thing that I love doing as much as travelling, it is helping people in their quest to find the perfect holiday destination. However, instead of just handing out recommendations, what I like to do is try and figure out what motivates someone to go on a vacation in the first place. I believe that by knowing your current destination in life, you stand a much better chance at finding a travel destination that is in-tune with your needs and desires.

With that being said, most people agree that certain trips are best taken at a particular stage in one’s life. Exploring the Australian Outback on foot is not something a senior citizen is likely to enjoy much, but as always, your mileage may vary. If you are with me on this, it will be my pleasure to share a couple of suggestions on where one ought to be travelling depending on where one is currently at on the journey of their life.

Spend Your Gap Year Hiking on The Camino de Santiago

For many people, entering college marks the transition from childhood to maturity. And what better way to give your younger self a proper send-off than by going on one last youthful adventure? If you ask me, one of the best places to experience the mystery and joy of travel is the Camino de Santiago.
Also known as the Way of Saint James, the Camino de Santiago is an old pilgrimage route that takes travellers along the northern coast of Spain, to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The journey is usually taken on foot and can last several months.

Travelling along the Camino is the perfect way to experience life on the road. As you walk along, you will get the opportunity to meet fellow pilgrims from all over the world, stopping periodically at rustic inns to grab a tasty local meal and spend the night.

Pamper Yourself on the Maldives after Getting Promoted

One day (hopefully soon), you will arrive at work only to find that you’ve finally been promoted. If you are anything like me, you will want to celebrate the occasion by going on that luxury holiday you were always dreaming of. And if money is no object anymore, at least for the time being, there is nothing stopping you from booking a trip to the Maldives.

For the uninitiated, the Maldives is a tropical island chain off the southern coast of India. What you will find there is as close to paradise as it gets on this planet – calm turquoise waters, beaches covered with alabaster sand, and a wealth of sunlight year round.

In terms of amenities, the local resorts offer luxury guest-houses, classy restaurants, spa facilities, and more. Personally, I recommend staying at an overwater bungalow with a private beach. These things can cost a pretty penny, but bedside beach-access is a privilege worth paying for.

Get Back on Your Feet after a Divorce on Thassos

A divorce is a tough thing to handle no matter where you are in life. Even if the parting was amicable, you still have a lot of soul-searching ahead of you before your life turns back to normal. In my personal opinion, one of the best ways of dealing with a divorce, or a breakup for that matter, is to take some time off to travel, ideally to a place like Thassos.

This small Greek island in the North Aegean is one of Europe’s best-kept tourist secrets. It has a mild Mediterranean climate, which is perfect for taking tranquil walks along the beach while watching the sunset. Accommodation can be found in all price ranges, and there is a wealth of beach-side activities if you wish to keep yourself occupied.

People from all over the world visit Thassos, so it is easy to find someone to talk to while sharing a meal and a glass of wine. And who knows, you may even end up meeting a kindred soul while doing so.

Enjoy Your Retirement at the Dordogne

If there ever was a perfect time to explore what the world has to offer at a leisurely pace, it is after you retire. With all your affairs taken care of, there is little to prevent you from just picking a spot somewhere on the globe, packing your bags, and taking off. One of my top destinations for people in retirement (or those that share the sentiment) is definitely the Dordogne region of France.

What the Dordogne offers is a chance to experience the pastoral idyll of the French countryside. The region is positively brimming with crumbling chateaus, slow-moving rivers and wooded foothills, giving it an ethereal, dreamlike quality.

Cheap accommodation is widely available, and locally prepared food is some of the best France has to offer. For those with a penchant for the old, the prehistoric caves of Lascaux are there to provide a glimpse into the life of peoples that settled this region in bygone ages.
