Periods are a vital part of many of our lives but they don’t always get the spotlight it deserves because, let’s face it, it can be embarrassing to talk about and we don’t look forward to it. I have PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) which means I have small cysts (aka fluid-filled sacs) that form in the ovaries and sometimes I get irregular periods but also I experience extremely painful periods. Of course, that is my personal experience and many have their own period journeys.

So whether you’re a teenager starting your menstrual journey, have PCOS like myself or someone looking to revamp your period essentials, I’ve got you covered with must-haves for your period starter kit.

Plus, stay tuned till the end because I’ve got a special treat for you – a downloadable menstrual cycle chart to help you stay on top of your cycle. Let’s make this a journey comfortable like Clair Huxtable did on the Cosby Show. She had Rudy well prepared with love.

Building Your Period Starter Kit: Essentials for Every Situation

I am all about making a first-period essential kit one to remember. I made one for my younger sister when she first got her period because I was inspired by the love and care my mom put together for me when it was my turn. Here are a few essentials if you want to make one:

1. Comfortable and Absorbent Period Products.

Let’s start with the basics. Consider getting a variety of menstrual products like pads, tampons, and even menstrual cups if you think you will like them. To know what is preferred, they will need to try it. Plus, everyone’s comfort level and size are different, so having options ensures you’re prepared for any situation.

2. Panty Liners.

Panty liners are like the unsung heroes of period care. Yup, I said it. I don’t know about you but they keep you feeling fresh and confident on lighter flow days and it works as a backup with tampons or menstrual cups because you just never know when you leak or think you might leak.

3. Comfy Underwear.

Comfy underwear that has breathable fabric is a must but make sure it also stays up and is not the type to shift around on you. Treat yourself to some cozy, high-quality underwear that is dedicated just for your period days so that you are comfortable in an uncomfortable situation.

4. Period-Friendly Pain Relief.

Period cramps are no joke, depending on your period pain, having pain relief on hand can make this situation better. Consider keeping a supply of your preferred pain relievers, whether it’s ibuprofen or a natural alternative you swear by.

5. Heating Pad or Hot Water Bottle.

A heating pad or hot water bottle is a comforting best friend for soothing cramps. Opt for one that’s easy to use and provides consistent warmth. If you want something that will stay on you while you do stuff around the house then maybe a hot water bottle with a holder or heating pad will be better for you. I use a heating pad and absolutely love using mine since all it needs is a charge and it’s good to go.

6. Period-Friendly Snacks.

Periods are known to bring on cravings sometimes. Therefore snacks are essential. Stock up on healthy snacks like nuts, fruits, and dark chocolate to satisfy your hunger. Don’t forget some unhealthy snacks too because you need a treat going through all this.

7. Hydrate Yourself.

Hydration is also essential so drink plenty of water. There are even some teas that can help with pain relief and your mood as well. Here are a few of my teas you can try out:

8. Discreet Period Pouch or Bag.

You know I am all about organizing so to keep your period essentials organized, you have to get a discreet pouch or bag. The last thing you want is everyone knowing your business so getting a pouch or period bag is both practical and stylish. It doesn’t have to be expensive either, the purpose is to allow you to carry your supplies with confidence. You can even use a small makeup bag or travel toiletries bag you are no longer using.

9. Wet Wipes or Cleansing Cloths.

Stay fresh on the go with wet wipes or cleansing cloths. Sometimes this one can be missed on the list but they are perfect for quick refreshes when you need access to a shower. Plus they can easily be popped into your bag without taking up space.
