Let’s talk about IKEA! I am all game for Ikea Hacks and to think about it, I haven’t done one in a while. So unlike me! I bought some BISSA shoe cabinet. Three to be exact. Lately, our entry shoe closet has just been a nightmare. I feel like I have said this before… maybe because I have. I don’t get how my shoe system didn’t work. It is an easy system to follow, hook shoes on a knob. Done. But everyone is different. So, I needed to go back to the drawing board. I need a new system to pair along with my entry closet. Through this trial and error comes new ways to do it right.
I thought I would spare you me building the entire shoe cabinet three times over. Here is what the shoe cabinet looks like. There is a white version as well in the store but we like the darker wood.
First Thing First
Once I did finish building, I didn’t want to tuck it into my entry closet. I wanted to have it out, not in the way and well easy to access. Plus my entry closet wouldn’t be able to fit these plus guest shoes when people come over. Originally, I thought about having these cabinets behind my couch. Thinking that it would be a cool way to have storage and hide our smaller couch but it wasn’t what I imaged. So I settled on having them on top of my entryway storage bench that I created. If you want to check out that post you can see it here.
Next, Marking
To create a guide for my to drill holes. I used my handles and marked where I needed my handles to be so I could know the right measurements. My measuring tape helped ensure that the two holes on the front of the shoe cabinet were indeed straight. You can’t ever be too prepared.
Drill Time
Once that is completed, it was time to drill. Which it my favorite part. I don’t know why I didn’t buy a drill earlier in my IKEA making days. I personally have the drill set from IKEA. Who would have believed that right? An IKEA lover with a drill set from there! Match made!
A Little Bling
I am super excited that I bought my handles from IKEA. It was one of the things that I wanted on my list on my IKEA wish-list post. These handles are called ÖSTERNÄS Leather handle and they cost $14.99 for a two pack. It is a little steep for handles but I love them on this shoe cabinet. It brings it all together!
Overall
This was pretty simple. I mean don’t get me wrong, having to carry all those boxes to my apartment and then assembling them were pretty exhausting but once done it was great. Like I mentioned before, I have placed two of my new entry way shoe cabinets on top of the bench I had created there. It is big enough to hold the cabinets on be able to sit down to put your shoes on.
Since it was not big enough to fix all three cabinets, I decided to create a opening in the middle so that the kids can store their backpacks. We tried the wall adhesive hooks but it just doesn’t work for my family and not for the walls. We have an older building and concrete walls. Hooks don’t last long at my home.
That it! Now each child have their own show cabinet. No more sharing and we can now truly see who is the messiest out of my siblings. Who can really keep their shoes in a shoe cabinet. I have hit the last option for my siblings to get organized. If this doesn’t work then I think we are going to have to get rid of shoes. However, I am hopeful for this solution. I mean it works for my shoes!
