Organizing the kitchen area can seem daunting at first because of how it is designed or just because of all the stuff that is in it. Your junk drawer is filled with papers and who knows what because you can barely see the bottom. You are afraid of an avalanche of Tupperware falling at your feet and don’t get me started on all the missing lids. I get you! There are many issues with organizing a kitchen so how can you really organize your kitchen with a smile? I am going to show you how today.
Step 1 – Empty Your Kitchen
It is best to take out everything one section at a time. Taking out everything at once can get overwhelming and feel like an impossible task. It discourages you instead of encouraging you. So, if possible take out your drawers one by one. Have a designated area nearby such as your dining room table and start digging in.
Step 2 – Declutter
I say this all the time and I am going to say it again, you need to declutter! For your kitchen, you are going to repeat the process for each section of the kitchen. Let’s start with the drawers. Once you have taken out one of the drawers, you are going to want to have a recycling bag and a donation bag or box beside you. This will give you a focused flow for you to actually declutter your stuff.
Step 3 – Use vs Don’t Use
It is time to get real. We tend to think that we need everything in our kitchens. Honestly, we don’t need everything we just want everything for those “just in case” moments. But you got to get Simon Cowell on yourself. You need to be tough, honest and fair with yourself. Ask yourself, have you used this item this year or have you used this item in over a year?Â
Step 4 – Donate or Recycle
For all the kitchen items that you don’t use, you are not going to have to figure out if the item is still usable. Ask yourself: Does this item still work? Could someone else still use it? Is it still in good shape?Â
These questions will help you decide if it is time to donate or recycle. Look for places to recycle your electronics and junk places that collect your broken items that cannot be recycled. For items that work and are in good shape, I personally donate to Value Village all the time. There are plenty of places that will come to your place to pick up your donations and all you have to do is leave it outside for them with a sign that says donate. You can drive it to your local thrift store as well.
Step 5 – Organize Area
Now that you have a blank space to work with, you can design your organizing solutions. Create category areas such as baking supplies and grill supplies. Pieces for your big kitchen machines will be easy to find if they are all together in one space. Use small or large bins, pull out organizers, trays or more to really create sections and function.
