One of the questions I get asked a lot is how to organize your closet? The struggle that you feel between finding what you want and actually having an organized space is real. I created this because I know what it feels like to open a closet to uninspired frustration instead of feeling great and ready for the day. Only to realize that I have 30 minutes to get myself ready, my son ready and get out the door.
We don’t have the time to be searching for what we want in our closets. Good thing, I am here to share easy and powerful ways to organize your closet. Before we start, I want you to remember that you need to be in the best mind frame. Get motivated! Grab yourself some music to jam to and a bag or two and let’s do this!
See What You Are Working With
Let’s see what you are working with, my friend! I know that many of us may not like to do this. Why? Because it overwhelm us to see everything in a pile on the floor or the bed. It can be stressful to visually see a mountain of clutter. In that case, I recommend you take out your items section by section.
The reason I am asking you to take out your clothing is that it is the best way to see, really see, everything you have in your closet. That is your best decluttering tool to judge if you need items or not.
Decluttering is Essential
Stop being scared about the word declutter. The biggest myth about decluttering is that you need to get rid of everything you own. That is not true! You are clearing up unneeded wasted space so you can make room for items you actually use. Yes, keep only using things you love and need.
When you change your mindset about decluttering you will be able to look at your closet in an entirely different way.
The mission, if you choose to accept it, is to remove all those in your closets that are:
- Too small
- Uncomfortably tight
- Too large
- Not your style anymore
- Things you no longer like/love
Think about keeping items that you say “oh I love this…” or “I wear this all the time…” because in most cases we always find a time or occasion to wear it within a year even if it’s not every day. Attain a feel-good vibe by walking into your closet with only clothes you love and need.
Visual Beauty
You can make your closet beautiful again! It just takes some creative and functional planning. When you have a blank canvas staring back at you, this is your shot to design it.
Believe me, you don’t have to be a professional designer to do this. Simply grab yourself paper and a pencil and map put where you want to put your things.
- Create sections for where you want your work clothes, dresses and shoes.
- Put frequently use clothing/items front and centre.
- Try hanging up your clothes by light to dark or rainbow.
- Ultize your closet top shelf with bins or baskets.
- Try velvet hangers instead of wooden or plastic ones to give your closet a uniformed look.
If you are thinking about making your bedroom walk-in closets come true, think about your shelving, customizing your hanging rods, storage bins, drawers and getting an island for more storage. Just by adding these things you are making yourself a closet masterpiece.
Keep The Cycle Going
We are constantly changing our personality, our minds, our personal growth and our styles are forever going to change with us. Which is why you need to pay attention when you take clothing outside of your closet. I recommend having a designated bin or bag nearby just for items to donate. That way when you put on pants or shirts that you longer like, you can put it straight into the bag. Yes, I want you to make a split decision whenever you put on your clothes to keep the decluttering cycle going.
