Vacation time is more important than some realize. It’s necessary not just for recharging, but for making lifetime memories. It’s easy to get into a vacation rut, though, and going about things without a plan can often lead to unmemorable vacations. If you want to make lasting memories, you should take a look at the tips below. They’ll help you to craft a vacation that will stick with you for a lifetime.

Have a Good Plan

A truly memorable vacation rarely happens by accident. While you don’t need to micromanage every bit of fun, it’s a good idea to have a solid plan going into the vacation. You should take care of anything that’s going to detract from the trip ahead of time so that you can focus on what you’re doing. This means booking travel plans, dining reservations, and overnight hotel stays ahead of time so that your trip isn’t derailed. Don’t feel like you have to be entirely beholden to your itinerary, but do give yourself a solid framework so that you can enjoy the little things while you are on the go.

Stretch Your Boundaries

If you want to make memories, you’ll need to do something out of the ordinary. The best vacations are always those in which something unusual happens, so go out of your way to go against the norm. Instead of taking the same vacation every year, try to go somewhere wildly different. Make sure to push your own boundaries by doing something that’s slightly out of your comfort zone. The more adventurous your trip, the more of a memory it will make. While comfortable is good, stretching boundaries is always memorable.

Slow Down

Don’t feel like you have to do everything to make great memories. In fact, the faster the vacation, the less you’ll remember each individual moment. Take the time to slow down and do things at a pace that allows you to let everything sink in. If you’re going on an international trip, for example, you should spend more time in one city rather than trying to hit every major destination. For some, this means taking longer vacations to do everything. For others, though, it should be a warning to simply reduce your expectations of what can be done on a single vacation.

Money Doesn’t Matter

Finally, stop worrying so much about money on your trip – studies show that the amount you spend doesn’t matter. Do your due diligence to figure out how to make the vacation of your dreams more affordable, taking the time to look at value deals and looking up cheap insurance quotes. Don’t feel like you have to drain your bank account to have a memorable trip and certainly don’t feel guilty because you can’t afford something that’s ludicrously expensive. It’s the experience and not the money that you will remember.

Be There

Finally, be present. Turn off your phone, leave social media alone, and set up an away message for your email. Memorable vacations require being present, so try to leave as much of your regular life behind as possible. Don’t worry about your phone or the sitter or what’s going on at the office – enjoy what’s in front of you. All of those issues will still be there when you get home and you can’t do anything about them from the road. Give yourself permission to relax and simply be part of your own memorable vacation.

Memorable vacations happen when you’re willing to put in the effort. Take care of the little stuff ahead of time and then be willing to put your time and energy into making memories. While you might not always take the most extravagant vacations, you can always take vacations that will stick with you. Don’t try to do everything – instead, spend time with those you love in place that will stick with you for a lifetime.
