How to Make a Bunk Bed Desk

how to make a bunk bed desk

I was finishing up the Top Bunk Makeover reveal when I realized that I was writing instructions on How to Make A Bunk Bed Desk. I figured… why not just make this a separate post instead of having it in the reveal of the makeover. Which brings me to this how to. One side of the bunk bed is finished for the Top Bunk Makeover but now it was time to tackle the other side of the bunk bed.

This is the biggest surprise yet…. the desk!

We bought thisĀ LINNMON white table topĀ from Ikea for $19.99. It was the right length but the wrong width. The width was a bit wide. Not a problem at all. Solution? To cut the extra bit of the desk. I personally don’t own a saw or electric cutter (adding it to my wishlist as we speak) and there was no way I was going to try and use a knife to get through it.

I called and asked Home Depot if I could bring it over and cut it but they prefer to cut things bought in their store which were fine by me. Finally, I found someone who knew someone that owned one. A few days later, I had my desk cut.

This is the inside of the desk in case you were curious of what it looks like inside. I, for some reason thought it was going to be hollow inside. Guess not.
I use screws to drill into the desk using the brackets as my guide. I used one screw per bracket but you can use two.

I repeated the same step to the wall without the desk being attached. Used a pencil to mark where the nails will go then drilled the screws in. I don’t own a drill (another item to add to my wishlist) but a neat trick I like to use on my concrete walls is hammering a nail in the wall, take it out and then you can use the screwdriver to put the screws in. Works perfectly every time for me.

Now add the brackets to the wall and the table up top. I bought these EKBY LERBERG brackets from IKEA for $2.50 each.
Have the other side of the desk rest on the rail of the bunk bed.
Now it’s done. The total for this project is $24.99.
