Natural vs Chemical
Why natural? Well, natural products are better for your overall health. Think about it, you are breathing in something natural over something chemical. Chemicals are toxic to your body and the airway of your home. Yes, chemical bug spray removes the bugs but it is also toxic to you without you having to eat it. Simply smelling it can be just as harmful. Why put your household through the toxic cloud when you can get the same results just by taking a more natural approach.
Natural Home Bug Spray Recipe
- 8oz Amber Spray Bottle
- 20 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil (I use Young Living brand)
- 1 cup of Distilled Water (or Brita Water)
This recipe is super easy and takes little time to make. I decided to go with an 8oz Amber Spray Bottle that I bought from Amazon for only $22.00. You can choose a larger size for your home if needed just make sure to double this recipe. I like this bottle because it is best for essential oils that can’t be in clear glass bottles but also because this one comes in a set of four and comes with chalk labels as well.
The reason why we use essential oils such as Peppermint is that the smell is too overwhelming for bugs. They simply don’t like it and I don’t blame them. Just think about a time you bought mints. The smell of it exceeds the wrapping or container alone so bugs like to be far away from it. If peppermint is not your favourite to smell, you can use other essential oils like Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, Lavender and Tea Tree Oil.

Step 1 – Uncover Spray Bottle
You are going to want to uncover the spray bottle first. Check the bottle to makes sure nothing is in it. If you have just bought your spray bottle it is always a good idea to give the bottle a good wash or rinse before using it.
 Step 2 – Pour Water
Step 3 – Add Essential Oil
Next, you are going to want to add in the essential oil. As mentioned before you don’t have to use peppermint but that is the one I am using for this particular recipe. I added in 20 drops to the water.
 Step 4 – Cover & Label
Once you have covered the spray bottle, you are going to want to label it so that you can remember what this is for. The worst is when you don’t have anything labelled and can’t remember what you put into the bottle. Labelling it right away will save you from forgetting. I used Brother PT-M95 Handy Label Maker that my family bought from Amazon.
Step 5 – Spray It Around
Give it a shake before every use. I make sure that I spray it around every corner of the inside of my home. Especially in areas you see bugs the most. Think about potential entrances such as doors and windows. I do this every week or so to keep it consistent. Since I have been doing this I barely see bugs as often as I used to. But also make sure to keep up with your daily cleaning as well so they have no excuse to come in.

Final Thoughts
Give this recipe a try! It is a perfect natural home bug spray you can use that does wonders not only for your home but your body too. I personally use peppermint on the temples of my head whenever I have a headache instead of grabbing a headache pill. Another option is that you can also choose to defuse it in your home as well to keep bugs away.
