Want to know how to declutter your apartment in 3 easy steps? I have been living in my small apartment with my mom, three younger siblings and son for a long time so decluttering my apartment has been a necessary task for our home. Here is what you need to know:
Step 1 – Decide on One Space
The key is to choose just one space or room in your apartment at a time. Skip the overwhelm! You are busy so reframe from the pressure of thinking that you have to do all spaces at once because you don’t. This space in your apartment that you choose will be your main focus for the day or weekend.
Let’s break it down even more by choosing which part of the room you would like to work on first. Here are some starting places in your apartment where you can start:
- Your closets
- Under your bed
- Your dresser drawers
- The cabinets in your kitchen
Step 2 – Start with the Easy Things to Let Go
Sometimes you need to ease into a project before fully diving on it. Since there is limited time in the day, I wanted to start you off with two simple and easy tasks for decluttering your apartment. I want you to do this first:
- Remove items that are Trash/Garbage
- Take away items that need to be put into the Recycling Bin
Yes, this will not only give you a sense of accomplishment right off the back, empower you to get to step 3, but you will also be removing some of your clutter in that space you decided on. That is a win right there!
Step 3 – Focus on No Brainer Items
One thing many of us struggle with is knowing what items to let go of in our apartments. It can become very stressful to think about letting go of items that are sentimental to us or brings back memories that we are strongly connected to.
So, I am not going to ask you to start there. In fact, I want you to focus on the quick no and yes items that you don’t have to think about (or what I like to say the no brainers items). Do this:
- Collect items you want to Donate without a doubt in your mind.
As for the items that you are not sure about, put in a spot and come back to it later. After all, you are going to need more time to really decide if you want to let go of it or not.
