Ever feel like you are busy juggling your 9-5, family, and everything in between? I know the feeling and many times self-care often feels like a luxury we can’t afford. It can feel like we are on a hamster wheel trying to check off an endless to-do list that ends up putting ourselves on the back burner. But here’s the thing that I needed to realize: self-care isn’t selfish. It is not a “nice to have one day.” It’s a must-have!
If we don’t take care of ourselves, how can we pour into the people and responsibilities we have? We can sometimes think that it is too time-consuming to add this to the list but self-care doesn’t have to be. It just needs to be customized to fit into your lifestyle. Let me share with you how to create a self-care plan that actually works, even when your days feel like a whirlwind.
Start with Your Why
- Is it to reduce stress?
- Want to feel healthier?
- Or simply have more energy to keep up with life?
Understanding your “why” will keep you motivated to stick to your plan, even when life gets busy. For me, my why is simple: I want to feel present for my family. When I prioritize my well-being, I find that I am a better mom, wife, daughter, sister and friend. Your “why” might look different, and that’s okay! Write it down, and keep it where you can see it as a reminder when things get hectic.
Assess & Break It Down into Categories
Do you have a sec? Take a moment to reflect on how you’re currently caring for yourself. You might be squeezing in self-care moments without even realizing it. It could be something like a morning coffee ritual, a short walk between tasks, or binging your favourite show while folding laundry. Identifying what you’re already doing can be a great starting point. Then, think about what’s missing.
- Physical Self-Care: This could be anything from staying hydrated to doing a 10-minute stretch before bed.
- Emotional Self-Care: Journaling, meditating, or having a heart-to-heart with someone you trust.
- Mental Self-Care: Reading a book, learning something new, or setting boundaries to protect your peace.
- Social Self-Care: Scheduling time with friends or simply calling a loved one to catch up.
Start Small & Schedule It
We schedule work meetings, doctor’s appointments, and family events—but what about time for ourselves? Treat self-care like any other commitment. Use your phone’s calendar, Asana or a habit-tracking app to help remind you. For me, Asana is my best friend and Sunday evenings are sacred for my weekly reset. I spend that time planning my week, doing a fun activity, and unwinding with a good show. It’s my non-negotiable!
