How to Give Your Room a Vintage Look

Modern does not mean better, especially when it comes to styles and designs. Each year we see new trends pop up in the room-decorating world that makes our houses look like space shuttles. And while this style is appealing to some people, others completely despise it and want to go back a couple of decades, style-wise.

We are not here to debate which one is better, as the saying states that tastes are not to be discussed. However, if you belong to the vintage group, we are here to share our knowledge with you. So, everybody who is looking to recreate a classical look in one of their rooms, make sure you finish reading our article.

Furniture

Vintage furniture pieces are as popular as modern ones. However, finding one in a good shape can prove a bit difficult. The general rule is that the older the piece is, the more work you will have to put into it. Vintage furniture is usually found at garage sales and let’s be honest, people selling it don’t take proper care of such items. Our recommendation is to count in the restoration cost from the get-go, so you don’t end up surprised when you hear the price.

As for the decorating part, we have a couple of tips, but it all comes down to one’s taste. In the kitchen area, people love to get an old wooden table and chairs, because metal or glass tables lack the warmth. Top that off with a wooden cupboard with floral patterns and you got yourself a kitchen like the one your grandma had.

For vintage living room furniture, you have tons of options. The main gist is to use natural colors with a lot of patterns. Visit some garage sales and you will hopefully find a vintage coffee table and a sofa to go with it.

Lastly, vintage bedrooms had enormous beds with large wardrobes and mirrors taking up most of the space. It is pretty difficult to find this type of furniture, but if you manage, make sure you do everything you can to retain its original look. Adding a coat of paint can completely offset the vintage look and you don’t want to do that.

Lighting

Vintage lighting accessories like lamps and chandeliers are a nice addition to the overall look of the room, but you need to be careful when installing them. There is no vintage living room without a large centerpiece chandelier right in the middle of it and it is hard to imagine a vintage bedroom with no bedside lamps. Again, you should raid some garage sales to find these pieces or even visit an auction that bids this type of stuff.

One thing to note when picking a vintage lamp or any lighting accessory is to always consult with a professional electrician. Wires on these items are probably worn out and need to be replaced. That is why your safest option is to call your Sydney electrician and have them do the wiring. For professional hands, it’s a quick and easy job, but one that could save your house from burning down.

Accessories

Before we finish our article, we would like to mention vintage accessories. These can be anything from posters and paintings to vases and carpets. No room is complete without a couple of accessories to make it unique. Dig up some old vases and put them in the corners of your rooms or hang some posters that are from the right period. Furniture alone is not enough to create a vintage look, so place some appropriate accessories here and there.

And that would be it. As you can see giving your room a vintage look is not that difficult. Just remember to search garage sales for the right piece of furniture and be prepared to do some work on it. The restoration process can cost a lot, but the end result is definitely worth it.
