International Women’s Day has just recently passed, an official date to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women across nations and throughout history. Indeed, gender parity and the role of women in society has come a long way since the olden days, and this is something to keep in mind and celebrate every day as we individually seek to enrich our own lives and contribute to society. Thankfully, it is much more common now to see women in STEM, politics, business, medicine, etc. – all the professions that were reserved for men for a very long time throughout history. There is always more progress to be made, but the achievements we’ve seen thus far are certainly propelling positive change in a steady manner.
Â
But what about some completely unusual, surprising career choices – perhaps professions you might not have even heard of before? Non-traditional occupations are becoming increasingly popular, and people take their careers in some very unconventional directions. This stands equally for both women and men. So ladies check out some unique occupations you might not have known existed, and let yourself be inspired.
Doula
Â
This profession is number one on the list because it is one of the few career paths reserved for women only. Simply put, a doula is a woman who offers professional pregnancy and birth support services – a person offering knowledgeable support to an expectant mother, but without a medical role. She offers emotional and physical aid, while also assisting the expectant mother in making informed decisions regarding her birthing plan and other choices. Her services can also extend after the birth, when she is there to help the transition from pregnancy to raising a newborn – from breastfeeding advice to lightening the load of chores for the new parents.

Professional bridesmaid
This one is pretty self-explanatory. Most women admittedly dread having the role of bridesmaid at their friend’s wedding because, although it is a great honor. It represents a plethora of responsibilities prior to and during the wedding, not to mention the stress, time and energy. Considering this simple fact. It’s safe to say that whoever thought of this as a career choice is a pure genius. A growing number of brides-to-be are hiring professional bridesmaids, not for lack of friends or relatives to fill the role, but rather to do the behind-the-scenes work and thus relieve her and her bridesmaids from the tension. It’s essentially event planning and personal assistance for the bride, so
event planner training is very beneficial to someone who’d consider being a professional bridesmaid.
Lash artist
A career in the beauty industry is no novelty, but it is the conventional type of career that can be made unique if you have a creative or exotic stylistic approach. Also, as this industry is constantly changing, developing and innovating. There can always be a new skill or trick to learn that would set you apart from others. Enter the Lash Artist – someone who has undergone eyelash extension training and qualifies in beautifying the natural eyelashes of clients. What woman doesn’t love luscious, long lashes, regardless of her age? It is indeed an art form, one that is growingly popular among cosmetologists and women worldwide.
Airplane repossession agent
This job is seriously badass, and you might have heard of it via Discovery Channel’s series Airplane Repo. Airplane repossession specialists are responsible for recovering commercial aircraft from anywhere on the globe. When owners fall behind on their payments (so they’re usually hired by banks). This is always done in a team. Because as you can imagine, it involves complex logistics and various sets of skills. Flying an airplane is obviously a mandatory skill in this career, so you’d first need pilot and flight training. We don’t have the exact numbers but various articles about this profession indicate that this is a field dominated by a male workforce, so ladies if you’re up for it, don’t hesitate to clear the path!
Voice-over artist
Have you ever been told you have a soothing or simply unique voice? Or maybe you have the capability of changing voices and doing clever voice impressions? If that’s the case, the job of a voice-over artist could be the one for you. You’d be working in video games, TV shows, animated films and anything else requiring a voice-over so it can make for a really diverse and exciting career. The most famous female voice-over artist (or, voice actress) is Grey DeLisle whose voice features in various TV series, cartoons, video games etc.
 Final Words
The list can go on and in various directions, so if you’re looking for a career change or just setting out on your path and want to know what unconventional professions are out there, get ready to do some digging. Find what you love doing and quite possibly. You could be the one to come up with something new and unusual. Either way, it’s great to remind yourself you don’t have to be doing something just because of societal conventions. Your choice may be odd but brilliant, and it could be the beginning of a fulfilling professional life.Â
