Summer is a great time of year because the kids are out of school which means more time to spend together as a family! A lot of times parents feel like they cannot work on summer projects because their kids are around. However, as long as you take the proper safety precautions, kids can be a great help to summer projects. This is a great way to cross items off your summer to-do list while also spending time with your kids and helping them learn valuable life lessons. We will share a few project ideas today to get you started.
Plant Flowers Together
Planting flowers together is the perfect family activity for kids of any age. If including young children, be sure to take precautions if using small gardening tools. You could make this activity as small or large scale as your family wants. You could start by filling a few small planters with flowers or even landscape around your entire house! Use this opportunity to teach your children how to properly plant and care for flowers. The awesome part about this project is that you can keep it going by watering your flowers every day!
Make Cornhole Boards Together
This is another activity that will keep the fun going long after the project has finished. Make this a fun activity by taking the family to the store to gather the necessary materials. Once the materials are home, let the adults do the woodworking to get started. Then, let the kids help paint the boards. Consider using a stencil or let your kids be creative. If you want to do the whole project yourself, buy some fabric and filling to make the cornhole sacs. If you have any kids that like to help with sewing, let them help with this part. Once the paint has dried and the sacs are complete, engage in a friendly game of cornhole!
Hang a Tire Swing Together
Hanging a tire swing together can be an activity that is fun for the whole family. Stretch this process out a little bit by gathering the materials you will need together and then set out on the hunt for the perfect tree for your tire swing. Explain to the kids that you need a strong and healthy tree to support the tire swing. Once you find the perfect tree, hang up the swing and take turns using it! This may seem like a child’s activity, but you will be surprised how fast a tire swing can take you back to your childhood.
Build a Fireplace
This is the more adult-centered activity on the list. A gas log fireplace is a great addition to any outdoor space. Start this project the way you would any of the others on the list, by first gathering your materials. This will consist of choosing a design for your fireplace, making a list of the materials you need, and then heading to the store to pick them up. Once you choose the fireplace and install the base, you will bring your design to life. Next, you make the frame for the fireplace and then connect the gas to the fireplace. If you want the fireplace to be waterproof, you will want to cover it with roofing. The next step is cladding to cover the roofing, followed by coating the stone with mortar. Incorporate kids into the activity by allowing them to help with the design process. They could also paint small stones to place around the fireplace. Be sure to take extra precautions if you have the kids around during the building process!
Conclusion
No matter what project you choose to do with your family, you will be sure to have a great time because you are spending time with your family. Remember to take safety precautions to ensure that everything sticks to the plan!
