DIY Network’s Income Property Inspiration

You know me well enough to know that I am a huge TV girl and one of my guilty pleasures is watching DIY shows. There is one show in particular that I enjoy watching and that is DIY Network’s Income Property with host licensed contractor Scott McGillivray. Maybe it’s the interior decorator inside me, but I sure can watch a ton of those style of shows. I just melt into each and every final revelation. I have been watching this show for a long time now and it has given me inspiration for a dream of mine.

If you are not familiar with DIY Network’s Income Property, let me fill you in on what you have been missing out on. I could gush over how he works with homeowners to makeover a part of their home and create an income suite that can be rented out to ultimately help cover their mortgage or I could let him talk about the show himself.

I was asked, What would I do if I could live mortgage/rent-free? Almost instantly I could imagine what I would do. Yes, I would love to tackle one of my dreams of traveling to one of the places I have listed on my dreams page (Greece, Tahiti, Australia), however, I am thinking even bigger than that. I am thinking long term. I would buy a fixer up and then I would love to renovate it. Give it a complete makeover and flip it upside down.

Why wouldn’t I just buy the home of my dreams, pack up and move? Well, where is the fun in that! I rather, give a huge makeover, put all my ideas in and have a hand in creating my home. It’s cheaper than having to start from the ground up. Believe me, that was my original plan when I was younger. Let’s be honest, though, for my first home, I have a feeling it is not going to look 100% like what I imaged and when you are a Pinterest lover + interior decorator you start having high expectations.

My family situation is pretty unique (Me, my toddler son + My mom and three siblings) so our home has to match our needs. How can I have my own place while still not being too far away from home? The answer is income property. Yes, I guess you are thinking, ‘income property?… how is that possible when you are living there?‘ Well, I don’t plan on living in a basement apartment for the rest of my life. It’s my first home (okay I am sharing my first home but it is still mine). I am still near my family and still have my own home. Plus, when I do find my second home of my dreams. My mom can rent out my basement apartment and have her own income property.
