It’s hard to beat the feeling of accomplishment that comes from planting, growing, and harvesting your homegrown vegetables. Unfortunately, not all of us have the outdoor space to plant a garden. But that’s OK because you can grow some of the best plants for a happy, healthy home inside! If you’re new to growing indoor veggies but can’t wait to start, check out this beginner’s guide to growing vegetables indoors!

Choosing Your Veggies

First, you must choose what you want to grow! You probably want to select the easiest veggies to grow indoors if you’re new to gardening. Cool, leafy salad greens are your best option as they can grow in only four weeks and don’t take up much space. Spinach, arugula, lettuce, and green onions are also simple plants that don’t require much maintenance, and you can harvest them anytime!

Choosing Your Supplies

You’ve decided what to grow and have your seeds; now, it’s time to gather the rest of your supplies! You don’t need artificial lights, but they can help, particularly if you’re growing in the winter months and sunlight in your home is in short supply.

Shop lights are great for seedlings and leafy greens, while grow lights are best for bigger crops, like tomatoes and cucumbers. Don’t go crazy with the potting mix or containers if it’s your first time. Stick with the basic potting mix and simple containers with drainage holes and enough room for your veggies to grow.

Maintenance

If it’s your first go at gardening, you might feel tempted to constantly water your veggies to make sure they get enough. Be careful; this can lead to overwatering, and you may end up choking your plants. Check if the soil is moist or dry daily and water accordingly.

For best results, fertilize your veggies with some houseplant food to give them an extra boost of nutrients. It’s also helpful to keep a journal or log of your plant’s growth to ensure everything is on track!

Harvest

You’ve done the work and watched your seeds sprout and grow into beautiful vegetables and herbs. Now, it’s time to harvest! If the stem or leaves are the edible part of your plant, you can harvest whenever you’d like! Consult your seed packet for recommended harvest instructions for bigger vegetables, like tomatoes or peppers.

Conclusion

Hopefully, this beginner’s guide to growing vegetables indoors was helpful to you as you begin your gardening journey!
