Going on an African safari is totally different from all other trips. It’s a wild experience where you get to navigate through the dusty roads and bushes in an open top land rover to get a great view of the African wild.

In such a trip, you are guaranteed to interact with a fair amount of dirt, experience varying temperature changes from extremely hot sunshine to very chilly breezes. Knowing what to pack in such a case is essential. Here are 5  things that are essential to pack for a trip to the safari:

Safaris are casual and do not need official clothing. The best selection of clothes to pack is those that are lightweight and loose-fitting so that your body stays cool and dry the whole time. Additionally, ensure that you pack a jacket for the chilly mornings and cold breezy nights. You’ll also want to carry along some long-sleeved shirts and trousers to cover your skin from bug bites.

Other clothing you can pack are some pairs of shorts, sunglasses, sunhats, a lightweight raincoat, a sports bra for ladies, cotton underwear for easy washing and quick drying, socks, hiking boots or walking shoes, sandals to wear on the campsite, and a money belt to store your money.

2.    A First Aid Kit

Safari vehicles are always fitted with first aid kits, but to be on the safe side, it’s better to pack your own in case you encounter an injury.

Some of the important items to have within your first aid kit include crepe-rolled and triangular bandages, disposable sterile gloves, scissors, a digital thermometer, different sized plasters, sterile gauze dressings in different sizes, skin rash cream and cream to relieve you from insect bites, painkillers like paracetamol and aspirin, eye wash and sterile eye dressings, alcohol-free cleaning wipes, tweezers, distilled water to clean wounds, and sticky tape.

Ensure that you also have a first aid booklet to guide you on how to do some simple first aid.

3.    Toiletries

Safaris involve interacting with a lot of dirt while in the wild and your body is bound to get really sweaty and dirty from the adventures and activities of the day. You’ll need to pack some toiletries to clean up your body and stay hygienic.

Some of the toiletries you can have include soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, a travel size shampoo, sunscreen, moisturizer, antiseptic gel to clean your hands in places with no water, and sanitary towels for ladies. Pack any other toiletry that you feel would be beneficial for you during your trip.

You will need to pack a few electronic devices during your trip. Some of the essential ones include a point-and-shoot or digital SLR camera for recording videos and capturing photos, a memory card, some spare batteries and a solar charger, binoculars, a flashlight to use at night, and an iPad or tablet with travel apps.

5.    A Waterproof Bag

This bag is important to pack on your trip not only to keep your stuff from getting wet from rain but also from accumulating dust as you drive through the wild. Waterproof bags prevent dust particles from penetrating into the bag and making your stuff all dirty.
