Yes, those pesky drawers and overfilled cabinets can drive us just about crazy! I don’t know about you, but I have had my share of annoying cabinets that just don’t look organized.

So, what do we do?  This is where kitchen organization 101 comes in to help and I am spilling all the tea.

Step 1 – Create Realistic Kitchen Goals

Let’s be honest, sometimes we have trouble identify realistic goals. We all face that moment when we see our dream kitchens as we are scrolling through Pinterest. Many times, these kitchens are apart of a renovation, so they look extra picture perfect or they are done by professional organizers that are rocking it for their clients.

However, most of the time we are looking for a more DIY organizing approach that is custom to our kitchens, in this case here are some questions we should ask ourselves before jumping in.

  • How am I using my kitchen?
  • How do I want to use my kitchen?
  • What is not working for me in my kitchen?
  • Is there something (like a kitchen tool) I am missing in my kitchen?

Step 2 – Sort & Edit your Kitchen Items.

When you have figured out your goals, it is time to dive in. You will want to first sort and edit your kitchen items. This can also be known as decluttering, removing items you do not need or not holding onto items that don’t spark joy.

Here is what you should do, take everything out of the cabinets. All of it! Another option, of course, is taking items out section by section. Either way, you are going to want to see the space you are working with excluding the items in it.

Set out the items and put them into categories on a large surface or get a sheet to put on the floor and use that space. Create sorting piles of Keep, Donate, Trash and Fix. As you go through your items you will determine where the items should be placed.

Let’s get thinking! You are going to want to create kitchen zones that best cater to your layout and your family. What kind of zones are we talking about? Well, I am talking about creating a baking zone filled with all your baking tools and machines, or a food prepping zone filled with your go-to spices and more.

Step 4 – Systemize & Add Product

Use the zones that you have created. You can now create your system and add products. This is by far the fun part because you can go to Amazon or the Container Store to really get your organizing on! It can get overwhelming being in a store these days so make sure that you bring your shelving and drawer measurements with you to ensure that the items can fit.
