To all my friends who are in college or leaving high school and just don’t know what to do job-wise either for the summer or while you are going to school then this article is for you. I am at the stage where I have a mix of friends in different chapters in their lives but with the same goal, they don’t know what to do yet for a career but have some ideas. I went through that stage in my life and still am in some instances. Here are some ideas to get you out there.
Baseline Jobs
Now, these are your classic go-to job which is retail. It is a great starter job for those who don’t have experience in the working world. We have all started in retail in some form or another. Make sure it is targeted at something you love such as crafts or a store you love shopping at. It is what makes it worth the minimum wage. I have had many friends start in retail and in the food industry so you have many things to work with. Don’t be ashamed to start there because, at the end of the day, you are getting paid to serve customers. If it helps, many celebrities have done these jobs as well. If you let them know ahead of time, they can be flexible with your work schedule.
Food Jobs
We all got to eat! This means we need some assistance with getting a table, cooking and getting the food to the table. If you are like me and don’t mind greeting people then the food industry may be the right place for you. I have to say, I personally have a fear of dropping plates and drinks so I knew from the get-go that it was not for me. However, that didn’t stop me from applying to be a hostess. Find a restaurant close to home or your school so that you do not have to go too far to get there.
Interning Jobs
This is great for college kids who are still trying to find where they want to work. You can get an internship with leading companies and try out jobs that you are interested in. This is fantastic to put on your resume. In many cases, you can try many companies over the course of a summer to really get your experience and before you know it you have experiences that you make you valuable when you decide to apply to your dream jobs. Moreover, you can even find some online internship options on Jooble. This only works for college students during the summer or school hours depending on if your course offers it.
Temping Jobs
Temping basically means temporary jobs. You go through an agency that finds your placement from two weeks to a couple of months depending on your company’s clients. They offer you the job, the price they are paying you per hour and you decide if you want it or not. It could be as simple as being a receptionist, scanning documents or archiving documents. Most times you are getting paid more than minimum wage. This is wise for the summer because placements are done during the working hours of the week.
You gain experience for your resume, you have the choice to accept jobs or not and you have the freedom if you want to travel since you are not tied down to a job. I tell everyone who is young and in college to do this during the summer because you can test out a career job or work alongside someone who is doing the job of your dreams to KNOW if this is RIGHT FOR YOU!
Final Thoughts
You would not believe the number of times I tell someone about these suggestions when it comes to finding yourself. This is the time to do this. Don’t get stuck in something that doesn’t benefit you in one way or the other. Use this time to try new jobs, and figure out what you want and what you don’t want.
Why? Because when push comes to shove and you get your degree or diploma companies are going to want experience and why intern then when you can nip that in the butt early and fast-track your career. Another upside to this is that you can maneuver your courses in the direction you want.
