The struggle that you feel between not having enough time and walking into a home that is organized space can feel impossible. Let’s talk about three actionable decluttering habits that will inspire happiness in your life. After all, don’t you want to walk into your home without feeling overwhelmed with the chaos and clutter?
You can do this! Decluttering is not glamorous at all and it takes effort to become Instagram and Pinterest worthy. My aim today is just to equip you with decluttering habits that will inspire happiness in your life.
1. Choose one room/space
The first thing you want to do is to choose one room or space in your home. It can be overwhelming to pull out everything from all the rooms especially if you are a team of one. You don’t need to do that. I don’t want you to be stressed when you are tackling this journey.
There have been days when I have looked at clutter and wanted to light it on fire or simply donated it all because of the overwhelm. I don’t want that for you.
Believe me, it is best to choose one room or one space. That way you are setting up your main focus which is that specific room. Next, break it down, decide on which part of the room you would like to work on, such as closets, under the bed, dresser drawers or cabinets. This is going to help for smooth sailing decluttering.

2. Know when to let go
We are emotionally connected to our belongings so it can be hard to know when to let go. Because of this deep connection, we can have rose coloured glasses on to the fact that we never use the items.
For starters, focus on the quick no and yes items to get those out of the way. Those are the ones you don’t have to think about and just know that you can donate or keep without a doubt in your mind. Plus, it is super helpful to feel that sense of accomplishment when you see yourself getting through things.
For the items you are not sure about, put it in a designated area and come back to it later. By putting them aside you are keeping the momentum going and not finding yourself in a stuck position. When you do decide to come back to it ask yourself these questions:
- Have I used this in the last six months?
- Am I going to use it this week or next?
- Did I take it out of the box or packaging?
- Did I try it out and did it work for me?
- Did I actually use it in my life?
- Can I live without it?
- Can I display it or store it for sentimental reasons only?
- Do I really need it?
3. Focus on Solutions
Now that you have decluttered, now is the time to focus on solutions that will work with your family. It is easy to get caught up in the imposter syndrome game. To look at mom bloggers or influencers who look like they have it all together.
It is not only about envying someone else’s life, but it can also include wishing you could have an organized, spotless home. As a result, we beat ourselves about why our home doesn’t look like that. Or creating negative unmotivated inner conversations about our homes never going to look like that.
Stop the negative talk. As much as you can try to duplicate, I encourage you to focus on solutions for your home that match your family needs.
Look at your daily routine and adjust your belongings and household to match it. Have frequently used items front and centre for easy access that means your gym clothes if you need that every morning or your work clothing. Test, test and test different things until you find a great system for you.
Final Thoughts
By using these three actionable decluttering habits you are making a difference in your home that will inspire happiness in your life. Simply walking into a home that doesn’t look like chaos or a hot mess is going to make you happy. Will it be perfect? No, and that is completely okay. Our homes and our lives were not made to be perfect but we can make it functional and happy without chaos and overwhelm with the right decluttering habits.
