Having a backyard is fantastic, regardless of its size or position. However, many homeowners are usually unaware of its potential and often neglect it when it comes to renovating the house. The truth is that a backyard can be turned into a private oasis pretty easy and has a great potential to look like one of those retreats you visited on your last vacation. All you need to do is to make a few twitches here and there and your ordinary backyard will be transformed into a dreamy outdoor retreat.

Build a fireplace

An actual fireplace or a simple fire pit – the choice is all yours but know this: outdoor living rooms are a huge trend right now in exterior design. Having an alternative living room in your backyard does sound appealing, especially for those pleasant summer days and nights.
Stacked stone fireplaces are a perfect choice for the outside and, if you have some skills, you can even make it yourself. You’ll need some stacked stone, lumber, concrete foundation, etc., as well as some tools. If this seems like too much trouble for you, fire pits are even easier to make – you can simply buy it. Just make sure you choose the one that will last for years, like the ones made of cast iron and similar materials.

Give your deck a makeover

Most backyards already have a deck but if it’s old and not taken care of properly, it’ll probably need some repairing. This, too, can be done by yourself. Start by removing nails and screws and inspecting joints to see in what condition your deck is in. Removing rotted portions and then applying a sealer and reinforcing the joist is a must while cleaning the wood and applying wood stain is a logical next step. Finally, you can attach new decking and that’s when the hard work is finished.
Beautifying your deck comes next. For example, if you’re worried about privacy, Asian-inspired panels or lattice fence might be a good idea. You can always make use of the plants and turn them into your cover. Be creative!

Furnish it properly

Just like indoors, choosing the right furniture for your backyard might be tricky. You’ll want it to be pretty, functional, and to last for years and finding something that matches all three criteria can be a rocky path.

Comfort comes first! So make sure you take a seat on your future chairs before purchasing them, to make sure you’ll have no regrets. Also, go for easy care and choose either metal or all-wicker pieces to be sure your furniture will resist any weather. However, your furniture should be stored somewhere during off season. If you don’t have a lot of room in your garage or basement – consider buying furniture that can be folded and tucked anywhere.

Beautify the fence

Regardless of the type of fence you have in your backyard, you’ll want to make it prettier. It can be done by using plants and trees near it. This will not only look beautiful but can also give you some more privacy. So feel free to put a few flower beds or plant a tree to make an all-natural fence.
Of course, giving your fence a makeover is a must. If you have a wooden one, make sure you repaint it for a fresh look, while a metal fence will need extra care. After applying a rust converter to protect your fence from corrosion, you can go with a decorative coating of paint to cover any scratches and dents and get that brand-new look.

In just a few simple steps, your backyard can be turned into a private oasis. Thus make your home even more valuable. Just imagine how good it will be to relax or throw a party in your own dreamy outdoor retreat and get to work!
