The 1970s was an iconic time for personal fashion and interior design. Luckily, many of those iconic trends are coming back for you to enjoy, whether you’re excited to put on a pair of bell bottoms or sprinkle your home with color. The following 1970s home trends that are coming back in style are some of my favorites, and I think they’ll be yours too.

Childlike Freedom: Hanging Chairs

The ‘70s was a time of childlike freedom for people, complete with flower crowns and fun music. Home decor embraced this childlike freedom with hanging chairs, creating an adult version of a swing inside. Hanging chairs are back in style, although there are more renter-friendly designs with chairs that hang from a stand instead of the ceiling.

Fun Elements: Terrazzo Surfaces

The 1970s was a fun decade. Roller disco parties were taking off, and Saturday morning cartoons were the highlight of the weekend. Fun elements crept into home decor with terrazzo, which is sprinkles of colorful glass or stone chips set in cement. You could see terrazzo surfaces all over homes in the ‘70s, from kitchen countertops to bathroom floors. Terrazzo is back in style, so make the most of this fun design element.

Tactile Details: Textured Materials

Another detail of the ‘70s, in addition to terrazzo, was natural textures. People loved to wear velvet and corduroy and decorate their homes with rattan and macrame. Now you can buy tactile details for your home in all those textures to complete the retro ‘70s look. Macrame wall hangings, velvet sofas, and rattan shelves are just a few examples of popular textured materials.

Bold Colors: Walls and Floors

One of the most iconic features of ‘70s fashion and home design was bold color. Everything in the ‘70s was colorful. After recent trends of stark white and gray home design, color is flooding back into the home atmosphere.

We’ve even learned that flooring colors can have an effect on your home; for example, clay red carpet can make your space feel bigger. Other popular colors for walls or floors include mustard yellow, various shades of blue and green, and burnt orange. Balance these colors with grays, tans, or browns for a warm home.

Home Architecture: Open Floor Plans

Perhaps the longest-lasting architectural gift from the 1970s was open-concept floor plans. While open floor plans have never gone out of style since their surge in the ‘70s, some homes don’t have this style. Knock out a few non-structural walls to open your living space and embrace the ‘70s. You can then furnish an open-concept living space with the chairs, surfaces, materials, and colors I’ve mentioned above.

Conclusion

These 1970s home trends that are coming back in style will bring so much fun and joy to your home. While you don’t have to embrace all of them, sprinkling ‘70s design elements throughout your space can make it cozy and relaxing.
