Over the summer I organized and declutter two kid’s closets with ease. It was actually both of my sibling’s closets that I went into while they were away at the cottage. To me, it is the perfect time to go through their stuff, organized it and not hear the words “why are you in my room”.

Oh yes, I was super excited about entering their bedroom and a little scared. I don’t know why I didn’t think about this earlier but this was my favourite part of the summer season. Plus it is extra quiet in our household. Typically, there are six of us in our 3-bedroom apartment. My mom, two younger sisters, younger teenager brother, my son and me. So, organizing to me in our home is a must.

Project 1 – Sister’s Closet.

Here is the before picture. Not sure what happened in the closet honestly, but I’ve haven’t been into the room for this sort of cleaning and organizing in a long time, so it was time to give this issue a solution.

As I went through the stuff it was pretty clear what was the problem. Everything was falling to the ground and not getting put away properly. No one knew what was in the pile on the ground nor did they want to touch it. I found mostly papers they didn’t want and a few drawings and projects I’m sure my mom would want. Fear not, I know that this closet has the best potential!

Step one -Take Everything Out

Now when you are faced with a closet in a condition such as this, the only way to see anything is to take everything out. I find throwing away things is the easiest when you do it this way. The best part is that it is something you do not really need to think too deeply about. It is an instinct to just do it as you take out stuff.

What you want to do is remove anything that is broken and can’t be fixed. This also includes any papers that are ruined or destroyed. This goes for the little broken toys or items that you no longer use or need too.

Step two – Sort Everything

Now that I could see what needed to be washed, hung up or donated, it was a quick decision for me. Since this is my sibling’s bedroom all final decisions go to my mom. I just sort them so she can see what is there and be able to deal with them easier.

Even if you are doing this as a parent yourself, sorting things out first can help make this project feel less overwhelmed. I highly recommend you do this. After all who doesn’t want a more easier way of organizing and decluttering?

Step three – Clean.

Cleaning is necessary before you really put anything back. You want to get rid of all the dirt, dust, sand or spider webs from the floors and baseboards. I find that vacuuming the floor is best for my home even though we don’t have a rug. The one we purchase really has a good suction that beats any broom and dust plan. Plus the hose attachment gets in corners and behind the bed.

Step four – Put away.

Since you can now see what you have it will be easier to put things away such as toys that somehow found their way in the closet can be put back into the toy box, clothing in drawers or being hung up.
Any papers can be collected for you to take a picture. I know some moms take pictures of kid’s artwork to make a photo album of it instead of having the physical items in storage.

Personally, I make sure that there is at least a hamper in the closet and a shelf for toys that are larger and can’t fit in a toy box or for under the bed storage. Also, we like to keep my sibling’s suitcases at the top shelf.

Here is the final look of my sister’s closet:

I love that when you walk into a space you can see everything. It is no longer overwhelming to deal with or walk into. The most important part is that you can find what you are looking for when you go into your closet and I believe that I accomplished that with this closet.

Project 2 – Brother’s Closet.

For my brother’s closet, I actually made it from the bunk bed desk that I created for my sister a year ago. Since she no longer has that bunk bed and my son does, it was only right to keep it there as a closet for my brother. I don’t have a before picture with the mess but I thought I would still give you a tour of what I did with his closet.

My brother’s closet now has a shelf right underneath it because I found that his clothing kept falling to the floor. If you have this same problem for your child’s closet then you know that clothing falling is almost natural. By adding a shelf, he now has additional shelving space and it keeps anything clothing that falls from being on the ground. It is a win in my books!

Socks & Tie Organizing

One thing I did differently for my brother’s closet was that I create a neat sock and tie organizer using a utility tray that we had around our home. It made it really easy to fold the socks and keep them looking tidy. Then I placed it onto the shelf for easy access and also to free space in his dresser drawers.

Final Thoughts

This is my way of how to organize & declutter a kid’s closets with ease. As much as I enjoy organizing and decluttering my sibling’s closet. It is really up to them to keep up with the organizing system I have set up and to not let the room become a disaster. Of course, I wish I could really go all out on their closets but right now keeping it simple works best for them. At the end of the day, I can only set up the system the power is in their hands to keep it that way. So what do you think, any closet tips you have for me that works?
